Rare monkeys settled in the Moscow Zoo

Two five year old female golden lion tamarins (golden lion marmosets) settled in the Metropolitan Zoo, transmits «Moscow 24».

The animals were brought to the Russian capital from the German Munster Zoo in mid-October. After a month of quarantine, tamarins were settled in the left wing of the pavilion «monkey house». 

According to the General Director of the Capital Zoo Svetlana Akulova, negotiations to obtain these animals have been going on for more than a year. In the future, it is planned to bring a male of this breed of primates to Moscow, to form a pair and get offspring.

Golden lion tamarins are listed as endangered in the International Red List.. The population of these animals in nature does not exceed a thousand individuals..

Outwardly, these monkeys look like lions. They have soft, long, bright golden fur., and the head is framed by a lush mane. The body length of an adult tamarin does not exceed the average 20 cm, and the weight is 500-900 grams. Tail length can reach 35 cm.

Tamarins spend a huge part of their lives in trees and descend only in case of urgent need., For example, during the mating season. They eat ripe fruits., as well as insects, lizards, bird testicles and thick resin of some tree species.
